Then God spoke all these words, saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before Me. “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. Exodus 20:1-6 NASB
GOD’s commandments guide us to the return of King Jesus. The word and the worship ….. Let the living Word from God seep into our soul and the worship Song to God pour out of our hearts.
The Ten Commandments taught in Exodus 20:1-20 are a summary of the entire Old Testament covenant law - and within these commands, God has given point form instructions to His people that encapsulates the heart of His covenant. They are God’s instructions for the lives of His people and continue in their relevance for each one of us today.
We are to sit with Holy Spirit and prayerfully read His commandments - asking how each particular command teaches us and applies to this life God has designed. We are to give thanks to the Lord based on the knowledge, understanding, and wisdom that we hear from the Commandments. We are to confess and repent of the sin that the command brings to light and then again turn to Holy Spirit in prayer for His revelation of these concepts, these commands, as we walk them out for God’s kingdom in our daily lives, our relationships and interactions with others.
The Word, the Lord’s Commandments, teach us that God is to be our everything. Nothing is to come before Him. Even if we are not blatantly worshiping a false god, we still have a tendency in our sinfulness to elevate other things, people, to the position God alone deserves.
Revelation 1:7 NASB Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen.
Confess to the Lord anything and everything that you have placed above Him this week. Maybe we didn't make time to spend with Him because we were busy pursuing entertainment instead. Maybe we were tempted to trust in our own wisdom and ability to manage a situation instead of seeking Him and depending on Him. Could it be that we have valued the things of this world more than the glory of God? Confess whatever comes to mind and bring it to the Lord knowing that He will forgive the truly repentant heart and that He desires His wayward children to return to His home.
Yes Lord God, You are God alone. There is no god besides You. You are exalted above all of creation in majesty, glory, and power. You are unchanging. You transcend all created and temporal things. You alone are the One who is from everlasting to everlasting. You are uncreated and eternal, holy holy holy Lord almighty, God over all. Amen.
God is speaking to us through the Bible and we must respond to His word.
