Now the earth was without shape and empty, and darkness was over the surface of the watery deep, but the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the water. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.  Genesis 1:1-2 NET

Imagine as far back in time as you can. Before earth. Before our universe. God was there. But He wasn’t alone. God is three in One.  God Jesus Christ Holy Spirit.

God the Father of all that is all that was and all that will be. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, made into man. Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God that dwells among us. Each one uniquely expresses God’s nature to us, but none is greater than the other.

In Genesis, when God created everything, it was actually the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, as One, working together.

John 14:7-15 NASB If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.” Philip *said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus *said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? The one who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own, but the Father, as He remains in Me, does His works. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves. Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I am going to the Father.  And whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it. “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

Basically, Jesus was teaching the disciples  that He is God in physical form. God the Father has no physical form, but Jesus is God in man.  Through Jesus, the love of God became - and is - something tangible we get to see and feel.

But, as Jesus’ time on earth was nearing an end, He made a promise. He told His followers it would be best for them if He went back to Heaven because then God would send them Holy Spirit. In the same way that Jesus became the body of God in tangible form, Holy Spirit revealed Himself as the mind of God living inside of us.

So, Holy Spirit leads us to the truth. He’s the very mind of God, available to us at all times because He lives within us when we choose to follow Jesus Christ. Amazing grace! He’s the voice that fills your head with God’s thoughts. Intimate. Close. Personal.

John 16:7-11 NET But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I am going away. For if I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you, but if I go, I will send Him to you. And when He comes, He will prove the world wrong concerning sin and righteousness and judgment – concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; concerning righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will see Me no longer; and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been condemned.

Can you even begin to imagine that before the foundations of the world, God knew you. He knew me. Before we were even conceived, God knew our names. He knitted you together in your mother’s womb. Not only that, but at some point during that process He inscribed the message of Jesus Christ on our hearts so that when we received that message, it clicked, and our longing hearts received it like a faint, but now retrieved memory.

It is the same with Holy Spirit. He is everywhere. He’s here with us at Gospel Garage and He’s there at your side now watching this.  The very air around us is filled with the invisible, soft, stillness of God’s voice and we were built to hear it, and then relay His thoughts to people through our own words and actions.

John 14:15-17 NET If you love Me, you will obey My commandments. Then I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it does not see Him or know Him. But you know Him, because He resides with you and will be in you.

Maybe too often in our busyness we miss this, but God wants to speak to us. Did you catch that? He WANTS to speak to you and me, to the guy next to us at the stoplight or the waitress at the local restaurant. AND  just as He built you to hear His voice so He built all of mankind to hear it too whether or not we actually  choose to ever seek God or listen to Holy Spirit.

When we do make the choice to repent of our sin and receive Jesus Christ as the risen Saviour, it will take prayer and It practice to learn how to separate our own thoughts from His voice, understanding that different people hear Him in different ways.  He doesn’t usually speak out loud, but His voice comes from inside of us.

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 NET Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is present, there is freedom. And we all, with unveiled faces reflecting the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another, which is from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

Sometimes, Holy Spirit sounds like thoughts, or He drops in a mental picture into our minds. Other times, He gives us a dream that just feels different. Most often, He speaks by illuminating parts in the Bible—reminding us of a verse we’ve read and helping us understand it in a new way.

When Jesus, our Saviour, our freedom, promised He would never leave us alone, Holy Spirit was the fulfillment of that promise. When you become a Christ follower, Holy Spirit moves in. We become His house. When He speaks, His voice comes from inside us.
